Pride Month- Reno Resources for LGBTQIA+ Youth

Kick Off Pride Month by Supporting Homeless LGBTQIA+ Youth! 🏳️‍🌈

Did you know 25% of Eddy House clients identify as LGBTQIA+, compared to 6% of the general population in Washoe County? This statistic underscores the historic challenges experienced by LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing homelessness. Eddy House’s mission is to create a safe environment for at-risk and homeless youth to develop the life and workforce skills necessary for sustainable independence. Additionally, one of our values at Eddy House is Dignity: treating everyone with equal respect, service, and opportunity. It is important that all youth accessing services feel welcomed and safe. Pride Month serves a reminder that everyone, regardless of their identity, has the right to a safe and supportive home.

The Challenge

LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing homelessness often face unique obstacles, including discrimination and a lack of resources. These challenges can contribute to increased rates of mental health diagnoses, substance abuse, and exploitation. Once we work towards addressing these barriers, we can help youth to focus on career development and housing. This is why Eddy House staff is trained to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all youth no matter their identity, background, or belief.

How To Help

There are many ways to support homeless LGBTQIA+ youth:

  1. Learn: Learn about the challenges faced by youth experiencing homelessness. Each of the 511 youth served in 2023 have different backgrounds, identities, and experiences – it is important that we treat all of them with dignity. Understanding their unique experiences, including those of the LGBTQIA+ community, is an important step towards offering meaningful support.
  2. Support Eddy House: We provide essential services such as shelter, food, healthcare, and counseling to homeless youth. Your donations and volunteer work can make a significant impact on the lives of youth in our community. Additionally, Eddy House partners with some amazing organizations to meet the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ youthNorthern Nevada HOPES, OUR Center, and Community Health Alliance to name a few.
  3. Be an Ally: Extend a helping hand and be an ally to those in need. Show compassion, provide resources, and foster inclusivity through the creation of welcoming environments where all individuals feel valued and respected.
  4. Share Stories: Use your platform to amplify the voices and stories of homeless LGBTQIA+ youth. By raising awareness, we can break down stigmas on homelessness and inspire change.
