World Mental Health Day: Addressing the Needs of Homeless Youth
Every year on October 10th, we observe World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health challenges and advocating for support for those in need. At Eddy House, this day holds special significance as we work with some of the most vulnerable members of our community: youth experiencing homelessness.
Across the United States, an estimated 4.2 million young people experience homelessness each year. Nevada, unfortunately, faces its own share of this crisis. Here in Washoe County, the 2019 Point in Time Count revealed that, of those surveyed, 44% of unhoused individuals aged 18-24 reported either receiving or wanting mental health services. This statistic highlights the intersection between homelessness and mental health, especially among young people who are already facing significant life challenges.
Homelessness is often both a cause and a result of mental health struggles. The trauma, instability, and isolation that come with living on the streets exacerbate existing mental health conditions, making it even harder for youth to find a way forward. These young people face anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other issues, but often lack the resources to access the help they need.
t Eddy House, we recognize the importance of mental health services for these youth. Through our comprehensive counseling program, we provide a safe and supportive space where young people can address their trauma and emotional challenges. In 2023 alone, we provided 1,020 counseling sessions to youth in need, offering trauma-informed, individualized care to help them rebuild their lives. We believe that mental health is a key factor in empowering young people to move beyond homelessness and achieve stability.
On World Mental Health Day, I encourage our community to take a moment to reflect on the mental health needs of homeless youth. Their experiences are complex, but with the right support, they can overcome the barriers they face. At Eddy House, we are committed to providing that support every day.
Mental health is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. And for young people experiencing homelessness, it’s often a critical step toward healing and hope. Together, we can ensure that all youth, regardless of their circumstances, have access to the care they need to thrive.
If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out to Eddy House. We are here to help.
