Finding Safety for the First Time

For many young people, homelessness does not look the way people expect. It often starts with instability at home, situations that feel unsafe, or the absence of any real support system.

By the time youth walk through the doors at Eddy House, they are often in one of the scariest moments of their lives.

That was true for Sophie.

When she arrived, she was not just without housing, she was carrying trauma, grief, and uncertainty about what came next. Like many youth experiencing homelessness, she was navigating anxiety, loss, and survival all at once.

At Eddy House, the focus is simple, meet young people where they are, and show up for them, consistently.

Building Trust, Step by Step

Sophie’s youth homelessness story did not change overnight.

It started with small, steady steps.

Staff worked with her to build a support system. To create space where she could speak openly about what she was experiencing. To help her navigate mental health challenges, including grief after losing her best friend, and struggles with addiction.

She connected with case managers, therapists, and programs across Eddy House, from the Drop-In Center to Community Living.

More than anything, people showed up for her.

And over time, she started showing up for herself.

What Stability Can Look Like

Today, Sophie is 22. She has her driver’s license. A car of her own. A foundation she built step by step. But what she carries most is something harder to measure, the knowledge that she had people in her corner when she needed it most.

“I had a warm bed to sleep in. Food in my stomach. A safe place to be.”

“The emotional support I got here… I’m never going to forget the people who made a really sad time in my life a little less sad.”

Without Eddy House, she says, she does not know where she would be.

“You guys are lifesavers.”

Why Sophie’s Story Matters

Sophie’s youth homelessness story is not rare.

In Northern Nevada, hundreds of young people experience homelessness each year. Many are navigating it alone, without stable housing, without consistent support, and without anyone in their corner.
